Bordering on that "other" Moldova, the Republic of Moldova, the
delightful county of Iaşi, home to Romania's
second largest city and the de facto capital of Moldovan Romania, is a
crucible of important history and culture.
With every bit as much claim to being "true" Romanians as their
Wallachian cousins to the south, County Iaşi is
equally the heart of the land of the "true" Moldovans.

The city of Iaşi is the most important city in Moldavia and one of the
most important cultural centers in Romania. It has the oldest University
(1860) in the country, and until the formation of Romania in 1859 it had
the same importance as Bucharest.

Across the Prut river to the east is the Republic of Moldova (Ungheni
raion), and just downriver is County Vaslui to the south. To the
west is County Neamţ and in the Bucovina region to
the north are counties Suceava and Botoşani in the
north-west and west.
With a total area of 5, 476 km˛, County Iaşi lies on a plain between
the Siret River and the Prut River. The city of Iaşi lies on the banks of
the Bahlui river, and further in towards County Neamţ, the Jijia River
crosses the county.
Demographics
The population of County Iaşi has nearly doubled over the past sixty
years, from 431,586 in 1948 to over 800,000 today, making it the third
most populous county in Romania after counties Ilfov and Prahova.
County Iaşi has a population density of 149/km˛,
with over 98% of the population being Romanian. There are also a
smattering of Rroma communities.
Economy
Due to the relief, the county is a predominant agricultural one.
Medium to heavy industry is concentrated only in the cities and
major centres. The predominant industries in the county include
chemicals, pharmaceuticals, metallurgy, heavy equipment manufacturing,
textiles, and food production and processing.
Towns
The big smoke of Iaşi rather dwarfs the other
municipality in County Iaşi, that of
Paşcani. There are three other small towns
too, Târgu Frumos, Hârlău Podu, and Iloaiei, along with 92 communes such
as Cucuteni and Ţuţora, and at least 200 villages.
Famous Iaşians
Iaşi has contributed so much through the
centuries to Modova's and Romania's great benefit, including the
birth of the modern nation.
All of the phone numbers in the County of
Iaşi start with (232) or (332), depending on
whether the service is through the old state-run operator RomTelecom, or
from one of the newer entrants into the market in Romania.
Dailling to Cluj, you must
remove any leading zero from the county code portion of the phone
number, so that (0232) becomes (232). Dialling a mobile
number, or those from hybrid service provider Zapp (0788), you do the
same, dropping the zero from the (07XX) part of the number, to make it
(7XX). Both landlines and mobiles have 6 digits following
the initial county code.
Surprisingly, we couldn't find hotels in the Moldovan capital
which offered internet services, although bars, cafes and
restaurants in Iaşi pick up the slack in this
eastern capital. But not surprisingly, all the hotspots were
indeed in the capital city. We await the first hotspots in
Cotnari, Târgu Frumoş and all points west.
