County Hunedoara is bordered by fellow Transilvanian County Alba to
the north-east, by Arad in the Crişana region to
the west and also by the Banatian counties of Timiş and
Caraş-Severin to the west.
It is bordered too by the counties of the Otlenian region,
Gorj and Vâlcea mostly to the south and south-east.
County Hunedoara is belongs to the Danube-Kris-Mures-Tisza Euroregion.
With 7, 063 km˛ of total area, County Hunedoara is comprised mostly of
mountains, divided by the Mureş River valley which crosses the county from
East to West. To the North side there are the Apuseni Mountains and to
the South side there are mountains from the Southern Carpathians group,
Parâng Mountains group and Retezat-Godeanu Mountains group: Orastie and
Surianu Mountains (South-East), Retezat Mountains (South), Poiana Ruscai
Mountains (South-West).
Except from Mureş River with its tributaries of Strei, Râu
Mare and Cerna, which forms wide valleys, in the North side Crişul Alb
river also forms a valley in the Apuseni Mountains - Zarand region. In
the South side along the Jiu River with its two branches West Jiu and East
Jiu, there is a large depression, and an accessible route towards Southern
Romania - Oltenia.
Demographics
In 2002, the County of Hunedoara had a population of 485, 712 and the
population density was 69/km˛, of which Romanians make up 92%, with the
rest being Hungarians (5%), Rromas (2%) and Germans just under 1%.
On the Jiu River valley, a mining region, due to the high
industrialisation of the region, many workers from other regions have been
brought in.
Economy
The industry in the Hunedoara county is linked with the mining
activity in the region. In the mountains, from ancient times, metals and
coal have been exploited. Nowadays, there is one large industrial complex
at Hunedoara owned by Mittal Steel.
Also energy related enterprises are located in the county - one of the
biggest thermoelectric plant is located at Mintia.
The predominant industries in the county include metallurgy,
construction materials, textiles, mining equipment, and the food
industry.
In the 1990s, a large amount of mines were closed down, leaving
Hunedoara county with the highest unemployment rate in Romania, of 9. 6%,
in comparison to the national average of 5. 5%.
Towns
County Hunedoara features a full seven cities, the largest of which,
and county seat, is actually Deva -- not the namesake town of Hunedoara a
bit further south. This city-county mismatch is the only one
in Romania, where the town with the county name is not actually the county
seat.
The other five cities are Brad, Lupeni, Orăştie, Petroşani and Vulcan.
Seven smaller towns are dotted through the county, from Aninoasa, Călan,
and Geoagiu to Haţeg, Petrila, and Simeria Uricani. Fifty-five
communes also exist, Dobra and Romania amongst the largest, along with
nearly countless villages (possibly 150 to 200).
The area code for County Hunedoara is (254) or (354)
Dialling County Hunedoara
All of the phone numbers in Hundedoara
start with (0254) or (0354), depending on whether the service is
through the old state-run operator RomTelecom, or from one of the newer
entrants into the market in Romania (the 3 ones are the newer
companies).
Dailling to Constanţa, you must
remove any leading zero from the county code portion of the phone
number, so that (0254) becomes (254). Dialling a mobile
number, you do the same, dropping the zero from the (07XX) part of the
number, to make it (7XX). Both landlines and mobiles have 6
digits following the initial county code.
We don't know of any hotspots in the main cities of Deva or Hunedoara,
but he one in sleepy little Haţeg south of Hunedoara might work for
you if you're headed south to Oltenia or the Retezat mountains.
