Lofty County Harghita is bordered by fellow Transilvanian counties
Braşov and Covasna to the south, and
Mureş to the west.
The Bucovina region is to the north, with counties Neamţ and Bacău
bordering Harghita in the Moldova region over the Eastern Carpathian
mountains to the east.
With an area of 6, 639 km˛, Harghita consists primarily of mountains
connected to the Eastern Carpathians, such as the Ciuc and Harghita
Mountains, volcanic plateaux, foothills and the more densely populated
river valleys.
The mountains are volcanic in origin and the region is known for its
excellent hot mineral springs. Harghita is known as one of the coldest
regions in all of Romania, but summers can be quite warm.
The county contains the sources of two of the most important rivers in
Romania, the Mureş and the Olt. These rivers' origins, near the villages
of Izvoru Mureşului and Sândominic, are only a few miles apart, yet the
Mureş flows west to the Tisza, while the Olt flows south to the Danube.
On the west of the county the two Târnava rivers (Târnava Mare and Târnava
Mică) flow to the Târnava Plateau from the Transylvania Plateau.
Harghita's many spectacular natural features include Sfanta Ana Lake,
a volcanic crater lake in the south of the county near Tuşnad, Lacu Roşu a
recently created mountain lake in the northeast near Gheorgheni, and
nearby Cheile Bicazului, a dramatic, narrow canyon formed by the Bicaz
stream. The county is famous for its spa resorts and its mineral water.
Demographics
In 2002, County Harghita had a population of 326, 222 and the
population density was 52/km˛, with 84.6% of that being ethnic Hungarian,
of the "Seckler" sub-culture (Székely in Hungarian, Secui in Romanian).
County Harghita has the highest proportion of Hungarians in Romania,
and one of only two counties where Hungarians form a majority (the other
being Covasna to the south).
According to the latest national census, the major ethnic groups in
the county are:
Hungarians (84.6%, 276, 106), Romanians (14.1%), and Rroma (1.2%).
The Secklers form majorities in most municipalities in the county,
with Romanians concentrated in a few specific towns, such as Topliţa.
Religion
The Secklers are mostly Roman Catholic, while the Romanians are
primarily Orthodox and the rest of Hungarians are Reformed. By religion,
the county is divided roughly thus:
The predominant industries in the county include a healthy forestry
and milling industry, along with Food and beverages, textiles, tanning and
leatherworking, and some manufacturing of mechanical components.
Towns

A Commune is a larger village which usually acts as a regional centre, with a
mayor, postal and police services, and sometimes larger stores. Other
villages may belong to the commune, and the over 2500 communes in Romania vary
widely in size.
All of the phone numbers in County Harghita
start with the area codes (266) or (366), depending on whether
the service is through the old state-run operator RomTelecom, or from
one of the newer entrants into the market in Romania.
Dailling to Seckler country,
you must remove any leading zero from the area (county) code
portion of the phone number, so that (0266) becomes (266).
Dialling a mobile number, you do the same, dropping the zero from the
(07XX) part of the number, to make it (7XX). Both landlines
and mobiles have 6 digits following the initial county code.
We don't know of any hotspots yet in Miercurea-Ciuc, Covasna or Sfântu
Gheorghe, so when you're having some fun in the Heart of Seckler country,
relax and get online in Odorheiu Secuiesc, a not-to-miss keystone
town in the area!
